How does a dry powder fire extinguisher work?

The dry chemical works by surrounding the burning material with a layer of chemicals that prevent further oxygen from reaching the fire. It also works by cooling the material below its ignition temperature.

DCPs operate as pressurized cylinders containing sodium bicarbonate and aluminum powder. When the cylinder is activated, it mixes these components, releasing carbon dioxide gas from the mixture. This causes pressure inside the dry chemical fire extinguisher to increase from a maximum of about 80 bar (1200 psi) up to a minimum of 120 bar (1800 psi).

The increased pressure forces a stream of dry powder out through the nozzle of the DCP fire extinguisher at around 40–50 liters per second. Because DCPs operate at relatively low pressures, they are limited in that they cannot be used on Class F fires involving cooking oil or fat. DCF fire extinguishers are also not suitable for fires involving burning metals, where the DCP will cause the molten metal to scatter.

What chemicals are involved in dry chemical powder fire extinguishers?

The dry chemical powder consists of a mixture of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), with 6–10 percent moisture content, generally referred to as ‘C6/10’, and aluminum powder. DCP Fire Extinguisher contains different ratios of these components depending upon their application. DCPs for use against electrical fires contain around 60% NaHCO3, 10% Aluminium powder, and 30% water by weight, while DCF powders have only 11-14 % water by weight. DCP used in kitchens or garages needs to be powerful enough to extinguish oil or fat fires.

These fire extinguishers used in these areas have a slightly different formulation made with around 72% NaHCO3, 15% Aluminium powder, and 13% water by weight. DCP Fire Extinguisher is also used for fighting Class D combustible metal fires where DCF is not adequate. DCPs for this type of fire has a slightly different formulation containing 90% NaHCO3, 4-5 % Aluminium powder, and 5% water by weight.
